Persons with disabilities resulting from developmental disorders, injuries, or chronic diseases are an increasing segment of the U.S. population (currently, about 43 million Americans or 1 in every 7). The impact of these disabilities on individuals, their family and friends, and society is significant. Rehabilitation is the process by which biological, psychological, and social function are restored or developed after damage. Social science research on disability and rehabilitation suggests that religion and spirituality play necessary roles in the recovery and adjustment process. This paper explores the role of religion and spirituality in the rehabilitation process.
